Dan Croll – “Home”

No Comments 11 October 2013

British indie artist caught our ears last year with the catchy “From Nowhere” and earlier in 2013 with the quirky pop tracks “Compliment Your Soul” and “In/Out”.  The eclectic musician is set to release another single next month entitled “Home”.  The song is a more straightforward approach for Croll but still possesses his signature style involving massive vocal harmonies and a variety of unconventional instruments.  The single will be backed by the yet unheard “Eyes Together” and released November 24th.

Washed Out – “Don’t Give Up”

No Comments 11 July 2013

As the heat rises so does the haze above the pending record Paracosm.  ”Don’t Give Up” is the followup to “It Feels Right” featuring the familiar sun bleached approach Greene became famous for.  An excellent track overall building even more excitement for the release August 13th.

Missed in 2012

may not be a true “Missed in 2012″ as I just came across her today, but since the two tracks below premiered two and three months ago and I’ve listened to each at least 10 times today, I’m going to lump her in.  The London based singer makes hard to categorize music dipping its toes into R&B, avant-garde, and chamber pop pools without ever coming across as trying.  At times she sounds like the female answer to and then suddenly a mature .  Enjoy the two stellar cuts from her upcoming debut full length Sing To The Moon (due out March 4th) ”Like the Morning Dew” and “She” and as an added bonus check out her latest single “Green Garden” HERE.

are back with serious builder called “The Waves”.  Conor O’Brien’s lyrics still stand at the forefront of the track as usual but the rest of the track feels like are evolving into a full band instead of O’Brien’s latest venture.  ”The Waves” is off the upcoming album {Awayland} due out January 14th via Domino.  Head HERE to pre-order.

Andrew Bird – “Three White Horses”

“One album was just not enough to contain all the music created this year,” so get ready for the companion to the excellent Break It Yourself from .  The first taste of Hands Of Glory, “Three White Horses”, is a pretty straight forward song for Mr. Bird and friends.  It contains no signature violin or whistle but is great nonetheless.  Catch Andrew Bird on tour, see tour schedule after the jump.

We had to wait three years for a glimpse of a new , but after just a month we have our second sound from the upcoming release.  ”East Enders Wives” is less of a rocker more reminiscent of their last two albums focusing more on the lyrical prowess of lead singer Aaron Weiss.  Ten Stories is due out in only a couple weeks.

Snowmine – “Curfews”

is a five piece indie rock group out of Brooklyn that utilize a plethora of instrumentation to create epic and addictive music.  Their new single “Curfews” is a great example of their unique blend of space filling orchestration and pop sensibility.  The band is led by a new-classical composer, Grayson Sanders, which explains a lot about their ability to craft such mature recordings.  If this track tickles your fancy in the slightest last year’s Laminate Pet Animal should be next on your queue.  Stream and purchase it HERE–at least give the opener ”Beast in Air, Beast in Water” a play.

Youth Lagoon

This young man caught my ears early this year during his initial blog swell but I never got around to posting.  Soon Trevor Powers was the talk of the indie world–being interviewed by Pitchfork and releasing his debut The Year of Hibernation on Fat Possum.  I guess writing anything just felt like noise in the already pretentious crowd.  But the kid’s good, so what better way to wrap up Missed in 2011.

Twenty-two year old Powers has an amazing ability to create titanic anthems without them feeling disingenuous or trite.  Maybe it’s his small arsenal of instruments or his lo-fi production but every track on Hibernation comes across authentic.  The record’s centerpiece “July” was released via his bandcamp page earlier this year for free download as if this was just a hobby.  The song  begins quiet and reserved but soon evolves into a powerful wave of sound as Powers tells a story of love loss and realization.  By the song’s apex you know this kid is for real.  Listen to “July” and other standout “Cannons” below.
