Coachella Find: Savages

No Comments 10 April 2013

I like to prepare for music festivals by giving every artist a listen.  The great thing about is there are so many artists of all genres that I always come across something I’ve missed.  There are a lot of acts I’m looking forward to that don’t need any coverage: , , , , , , etc.  This is dedicated to those sweet finds that I’m now looking forward to with equal fervor.  See you in the desert.

don’t quite count as a Coachella Find, but since it’s taken me until now to write about them, we’ll let it slide.   As soon as this all female quartet released their debut single “Flying to Berlin” / “Husbands” every blog from here to Pitchfork was all over them, and for good reason. The post-punk group has been heavily likened to Joy Division not only for their sound but approach and general outlook on life and music. See the statement released with the debut single: “For Savages the intention was to create a sound, indestructible and musically solid, written for the stage, designed with enough nuances to provide a wide range of emotions. The songs aim to remind us that human beings haven’t evolved so much, that music can still be straight to the point, efficient and exciting.” Not much else to say. Listen to their newest track from their May 7th Matador release Silence Yourself and check out “Husbands” HERE. It’s loud, passionate, and musical, I’m in.

is an Dublin rock band that’s markedly tough to categorize much further.  Strong influences of folk and Americana can be immediately heard, but there’s more to the five piece.  Slick guitar riffs are heard interspersed within post-punk chugging all the while 3+ part harmonies triumph over as if their songs were written specifically for outdoor venues like Coachella–listening to “Angel Owl” as I type.  Basically listen if you like bands with guitars, vocals, and drums.  I do so I’m looking forward to their set.  Check out the two tracks from their The John Wayne EP below.

Coachella Find: Unicorn Kid

UPDATE 4/9/13: Unicorn Kid has canceled his appearance…like a month ago.  I should check Twitter more often, or ever.  Still a great find and great artist.

I will find myself a bit out of my element for this one.  Unicorn Kid is straight up rave.  The 21 year old Scot makes chippy electronic dance music with all the passion of house music.  I was hooked the first time I heard “Pure Space”.  Something about his unique choice of synth voices gets inside my head and destroys any shred of sadness not to mention it also makes me feel like I’m inside an awesome NES game.  I will be at Unicorn Kid, I will be dancing, I will be happy.  Check out some choice notes below from the Kid of Unicorn.

Let the stokedness begin.  T-minus nothing and I’ll be basking in the desert sun drinking in the sounds by the likes of , Radiohead, , , Wild Beasts, etc.  Unfortunately there are quite a few serious dilemmas like Miike Snow/SBTRKT/Godspeed You! Black Emperor or /.  No matter, decisions will be made and no regrets will be had.  Check out the link below for a Spotify playlist to get you amped if you’re going, or jealous if you’re not.  Enjoy!

StB Does Coachella 2012 by SLAPtheBASS on Grooveshark

I will be attending my first ever this year.  In other firsts, the festival is being held over back to back weekends (April 13-15 and 20-22) with identical lineups.  The three night headliners are The Black Keys, Radiohead, and Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg and as much fun as those sound I’m more excited about all the small font bands (see full poster after the jump).  To start it off two legendary post-hardcore bands, and , reunite just in time.  Then there’s obviously , , , , , …the list goes on.  Coachella has a knack for putting together a cohesive weekend of music spanning genres from rock to hip-hop to electronic to folk.  Listen to the Coachella Playlist below to get hyped if you’re attending and jealous if you’re not.
