Coachella Find: Savages

No Comments 10 April 2013

I like to prepare for music festivals by giving every artist a listen.  The great thing about is there are so many artists of all genres that I always come across something I’ve missed.  There are a lot of acts I’m looking forward to that don’t need any coverage: , , , , , , etc.  This is dedicated to those sweet finds that I’m now looking forward to with equal fervor.  See you in the desert.

don’t quite count as a Coachella Find, but since it’s taken me until now to write about them, we’ll let it slide.   As soon as this all female quartet released their debut single “Flying to Berlin” / “Husbands” every blog from here to Pitchfork was all over them, and for good reason. The post-punk group has been heavily likened to not only for their sound but approach and general outlook on life and music. See the statement released with the debut single: “For Savages the intention was to create a sound, indestructible and musically solid, written for the stage, designed with enough nuances to provide a wide range of emotions. The songs aim to remind us that human beings haven’t evolved so much, that music can still be straight to the point, efficient and exciting.” Not much else to say. Listen to their newest track from their May 7th Matador release Silence Yourself and check out “Husbands” HERE. It’s loud, passionate, and musical, I’m in.

is an Dublin rock band that’s markedly tough to categorize much further.  Strong influences of folk and Americana can be immediately heard, but there’s more to the five piece.  Slick guitar riffs are heard interspersed within post-punk chugging all the while 3+ part harmonies triumph over as if their songs were written specifically for outdoor venues like Coachella–listening to “Angel Owl” as I type.  Basically listen if you like bands with guitars, vocals, and drums.  I do so I’m looking forward to their set.  Check out the two tracks from their The John Wayne EP below.

Coachella Find: Unicorn Kid

UPDATE 4/9/13: Unicorn Kid has canceled his appearance…like a month ago.  I should check Twitter more often, or ever.  Still a great find and great artist.

I will find myself a bit out of my element for this one.  Unicorn Kid is straight up rave.  The 21 year old Scot makes chippy electronic dance music with all the passion of house music.  I was hooked the first time I heard “Pure Space”.  Something about his unique choice of synth voices gets inside my head and destroys any shred of sadness not to mention it also makes me feel like I’m inside an awesome NES game.  I will be at Unicorn Kid, I will be dancing, I will be happy.  Check out some choice notes below from the Kid of Unicorn.

Rich – “Alone”

No Comments 12 October 2012

A nice surprise at the end of the week, this track showing up in my inbox.  Little information on himself can be found other than this testamonial video for Opus Label, which can be viewed on his website HERE, but no need since the track speaks for itself.  The LA based artist’s first single “Alone” draws easy comparison to genre giants and current peers .  Driving percussion and bass create a strong backing for the intertwining guitar and synth melodies while Rich’s voice rides the whole thing like a wave.  The single will be released on October 23rd via Opus Label.  Looking forward to hearing more.

Joy Division/New Order Compilation

No Comments 19 May 2011

On June 6th two of the most influential bands on modern music will release a compilation album which will include a previously unheard song “Hellbent”.  The collection entitled Total: From to New Order will chronicle the group’s transition from their start as Joy Division, through the death of legendary frontman Ian Curtis, to what they became.  It will contain 18 tracks, 5 from Joy Division and 13 from New Order, see tracklist below.

It is intriguing news to any die-hard fan to know the defunct trio can still play nice enough to release the compilation, but to throw a new track on top?  That’s a great end to the week.  Little is known about “Hellbent” other that it was recorded in 2005 and it’s a damn good New Order song.  Give it a spin below.
